What are some of the cars that are normaly in that class? Or better yet what is the lowest rating thread wear for street tire? 200? 180?

IndySCCA's SMS class is SCCA's SM (Street Modified) class rules with SCCA's ST (Street Touring) tire rules. In all ST classes, street tires must have a treadwear rating of 140 or greater.
R-Comps are legal in Stock, Street Prepared, Prepared, and Modified classes. SMF is SM for front wheel drive vehicles. Does that help?

So I will be ok with a 140 and still be in sms. If so I rather do that.

If you go R-compounds, i wouldn't bother with the R888s for autox competition. Dave did/does pretty well on them, but that's also due to it being a small class.
![]() R888s are open track tires. You'll get smoked by the guys running V710s and A6s all day, every day.

I'm hoping i can score a few sets to test n tune with over the winter for that reason. I'd rather tear up a $200 set of take-off R888s than a $1000+ set of A6s dialing the car in.

![]() This thing will require LOTS of dialing, i'm already anticipating sacrificing $1000 worth of A6s at least once either way.

1) Making sure everything runs and works properly on crappy tires.... ok. 2) DIALING IN a setup on crappy tires.... pointless. To me, those are 2 different things entirely. Things change DRAMATICALLY on good tires. Dial in a setup on crappy tires and you will regret it. Promise. |

Used R888s will likely be faster than a good set of shaved RS3s or similar. But i wouldn't expect a HUGE margin.
If you're looking local, i'd just stick with street tires and stay in SMS where the local competition is.

I want to get into road course next year once or twice if I get where I want with it over tbe winter. but mainly autox if its running good. May just dump money on long term set of good streets that I can haul to the track in the trunk. Looking at sets of basset racing steelies. 14x8 in front and 14x7 in back. Cheap track wheels
